On May 14, 1814, the first meeting of the medical faculty of the Imperial Kazan University took place. In the early years of its activity, it was called the Department of Medical Sciences. Kazan medical schools, formed by the professorial and teaching community of medical scientists during the 19th – early 20th centuries, are not only a scientific and historical, but also a bright cultural phenomenon. Already in the second half of the 19th century, the anatomical, therapeutic, surgical, physiological, neurohistological, ophthalmological, obstetric-gynecological, dermatovenereological and pediatric scientific schools acquired European significance and were glorified by the names of such outstanding scientists as anatomist P.F. Lesgaft, histologist K.A. Arnstein, physiologists N.O. Kovalevsky and N.A. Mislavsky, ophthalmologist E.V. Adamyuk, psychoneurologist V.M. Bekhterev and many others.

For many years, the medical faculty of Kazan University remained the only center for training doctors for the vast territory of the Russian Empire – the Volga region, the Urals and Siberia. Kazan medical professors became founders of new universities in Siberia (V.M. Florinsky), Saratov and Transcaucasia (V.I. Razumovsky). Outstanding Russian medical scientists began, continued or ended their careers in Kazan, among whom were such world-class scientists as Vladimir Bekhterev and Liveriy Darkshevich. Kazan medical scientists were able to get ahead of their colleagues from St. Petersburg and Moscow in many ways.
