Voronezh State Medical University named after N.N. Burdenko is one of the oldest medical educational institutions in Russia. The history of medical education and the traditions of Voronezh Medical University are connected with the events of 1801, when in the northwest of the Russian Empire in Dorpat (now Tartu, Estonia) by decree of Alexander the First, Dorpat University was founded. As was proper for a classical university, Dorpat University included a medical faculty. The university was supported by the Ministry of Public Education of the Russian Empire.
An important milestone in the history of Russian medicine was the opening of the "Professor's Institute" at the University of Dorpat for the training of Russian medical professors. Among the graduates of the Professor's Institute was N.I. Pirogov, the founder of all Russian surgery.
Pirogov N.I. (1810-1881) the first Russian professor at the University of Dorpat
In 1893, by decree of Alexander III, Dorpat was renamed Yuryev, and Dorpat University became Yuryev University.
Another page in the history of the university is connected with the name of N.N. Burdenko, a student of Yuryev University and later its professor.
The history of Yuryev University ended in 1918. After the occupation of the Baltics by German troops, Yuryev University was declared a German university in 1918. The Russian part of the faculty and Russian students were forced to leave the university. The expelled university staff, as well as part of the property of the Imperial Yuryev University evacuated in 1915-1916, became the basis for the establishment of Voronezh State University (VSU) in 1918. VSU included 4 faculties, including the medical faculty. Voronezh State Medical University named after N.N. Burdenko (VSMU named after N.N. Burdenko) is the legal successor of the medical faculty of Voronezh State University. Classes at the medical faculty began on November 12, 1918.

They became the organizers of departments (22 departments and 11 professors in 1918), clinics and scientific schools, which continue to develop to this day. The medical faculty of VSU began teaching students, preserving experienced professors, traditional methods of organizing and conducting the educational process, and the scientific potential of the teaching staff. The medical faculty as the main faculty was part of VSU until 1930, half of the students of VSU at that time were students of the medical faculty.
