Syktyvkar State University was established in accordance September 24, 1971 Resolution of the RSFSR Council of Ministers № 580 from October 25, 1971.

The previous name of the university: Syktyvkar State University named after the 50th anniversary of the USSR has renamed the Syktyvkar State University on the basis of Resolution of the Russian Government dated 26 June 1993. The official name of the institution of higher education is not specified.

Syktyvkar State University was renamed the State Educational Institution of Higher Professional Education “Syktyvkar State University” (HPE “SyktSU”) on June 24, 2002.

Mission SyktSU is to preserve and strengthen the role of the university as the leading university of the Komi Republic, carrying out: based on innovative learning technologies, training of highly qualified personnel at all levels of vocational education, capable of making an effective contribution to the intellectual, socio-economic and cultural development of the Republic of Komi and Russia; development of fundamental and applied science as the basis of high quality education; analytical and scientific consulting support for the socio-economic development of the Republic of Komi.
