The three-story stone house on the corner of Minin and Pozharsky Square and the Verkhne-Volzhskaya Embankment is the educational building No. 1 of the Volga Region Research Medical University – a cultural heritage site of regional significance
The building was constructed at the beginning of the 20th century according to the design of the brothers A.A., V.A. and L.A. Vesnin. The construction was supervised by the architect A.N. Poltanov.
The main façade of the building, facing the square, is decorated with a six-column portico and Ionic pilasters.
The rounded corner has four similar columns, above which rises the dome of the rotunda. At the floor level, the corner is surrounded by a balcony.
The silhouette of an Orthodox cross above the gates leading to the building's courtyard. After the 1917 revolution, the cross was walled up and accidentally discovered during renovations to the building at the beginning of the 21st century.
Initially, the house was intended to be the office of the Volga shipping company, which was controlled by the 1st guild merchant, major Nizhny Novgorod entrepreneur, wealthy ship owner, philanthropist, and city mayor Dmitry Vasilyevich Sirotkin.
A plaque on the building’s façade: “Building of the board of the Volga shipping company, a neoclassical monument, built in 1913-1914, architects L.A. Vesnin, V.A. Vesnin, A.A. Vesnin.”
Since May 1930, this has been the main building (educational building No. 1) of the Alma mater of Nizhny Novgorod doctors.
Memorial plaques have been installed on the building’s façade – to academicians P.K. Anokhin, N.N. Blokhin, B.A. Korolev, N.N. Trapeznikov and Honored Scientist of the RSFSR, Professor N.P. Sinitsyn.
