The Obninsk Institute of Atomic Energy is a branch of the Federal State Autonomous Educational Institution of Higher Education “National Research Nuclear University MEPhI” (IATE NRNU MEPhI) and has an almost seventy-year history with the Moscow Engineering Physics Institute.
The emergence of a higher educational institution in Obninsk in the fifties of the 20th century was due to the creation of a large nuclear-technical and scientific center here and, in connection with this, an urgent need for engineering and technical personnel in nuclear power specialties. In 1951, corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences, director of the Object "B" of the USSR Ministry of Internal Affairs Dmitry Ivanovich Blokhintsev and his deputy, professor Vladimir Nikolaevich Glazanov, realizing the inevitable growth of the Object (now the State Scientific Center of the Russian Federation IPPE named after Academician A.I. Leypunsky), came to the conclusion that it was necessary to create a structure in Obninsk for training specialists with higher education. D.I. Blokhintsev signed an order on the formation of a correspondence department of the Moscow Mechanical Institute (as MEPhI was called at that time) at the enterprise.
The Obninsk Institute for Nuclear Power Engineering (OINPE), traditionally abbreviated as IATE, is a state technical university in Obninsk, Russia. It is a major branch of the National Research Nuclear University MEPhI (Moscow Engineering Physics Institute)
